Guide to the Oasis

What is Orbit 04515 exactly?

Orbit 04515 is an ephemeral place somewhere in outer space, a cluster of electromagnetic signals that your Web Browser is capable of deciphering and displaying to you via the medium of this Website. There's a lot of unstructured, stranded, poor quality data out there, and that's why some people have taken it upon themselves to become "Cartographers" of this space, and collect data into coherent, pleasant forms. You yourself may be a Cartographer without ever having realized it! The places that us Cartographers chart and curate are a sort of Oasis in the Cosmic Data Desert.

The Oasis and the Internet are part of each other, and as a result, the Oasis is mostly made out of things from Planet Earth. But the Oasis is also something different, a new layer atop the reality of Earth. This layer is super interesting and has lots of cool, rare properties. To preserve this layer, like the delicate atmosphere of a greenhouse, we here at Orbit 04515 try to clearly mark Earthly content so that you can avoid it depending on your mood. Earthly content will be marked like so:

Pictures of a trip to a real-world tourist destination

While there's nothing intrinsically wrong with Earthly Content, we at Orbit 04515 understand you may not always be in the mood to see it.

What exactly qualifies as Earthly Content isn't a hard and fast rule. But to get an idea, Non-Earthly Content is typically hyperreal things that seem to have more of a digital or virtual identity than a physical one. Also, things that are "pure factual knowledge" like math or science, and some older historically-based things like music theory. The general idea is that Earthly Content may be something that reminds you of your real world life in "meatspace", rather than Cyberspace. Just like the warning said: While the Cartographers of the Oasis understand that there's nothing intrinsically wrong with Earthly content, you may not always want to see it.
